The port city of Vigo in north-west Spain is to charge a tourist tax of up to €2 (£1.70) per person per night.

The tax will also apply to cruise passengers visiting the city, according to the Independent.

It will be introduced in phases from October 2026, said the paper.

Until 1 July 2027, it will apply only to the first two nights, but this will increase to a maximum of five nights for each stay from 1 July next year.

The maximum amount of €2 per night will apply to visitors booking five-star hotels, while three- and four-star guests will be charged €1.60 (£1.40). Two- and one-star hotel guests will pay €1.20 (£1), campers and those staying in hostels, rural accommodation and tourist apartments and houses will pay ‘at least’ €0.80 (70p).

Cruise passengers will also be charged a tax for visiting the city, but this will not come into force until 1 July 2027, said the Independent.
