People travelling with pets to destinations within the European Union (EU) will need a certificate for their animals under new rules.

The States of Guernsey said all EU pet passports expired on 22 April and new national legislation, external meant pet owners must apply for an animal health certificate.

States Veterinary Officer David Chamberlain said pet owners whose primary residence is Guernsey will need the certificate from their vet before each trip.

The changes apply to all non-commercial movements of dogs, cats and ferrets.
