From 22 April, UK pet owners can no longer use EU pet passports unless they live in the EU, meaning most will need to pay for a new Animal Health Certificate for each trip to France.

New EU regulations coming into force on 22 April will prevent UK-based pet owners from using EU-issued pet passports for travel to France and other EU countries.

Under the updated rules, pet passports will only be valid if the owner’s main residence is within the EU. This means many UK residents who previously relied on French-issued passports after Brexit must now obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for each trip — a process that can cost over £100 per journey.

The change follows tighter clarification of existing rules, with authorities aiming to ensure pet passports are used only by EU residents.

UK officials are advising travellers not to risk using EU passports, as they may be refused boarding or entry.
