More than three million £1 bus journeys have been made in the region since the fare was introduced in September 2023, improving access to education, jobs, and leisure.

The scheme, aimed at under-19s, is part of a wider effort to make transport affordable and reduce barriers for young people.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: “Every young person should be able to get to school, work, and spend time with friends without the cost of travel holding them back.

“We’re continuing to support affordable travel for young people across the region, working alongside national initiatives like the recent announcement yesterday that the Government will provide free summer bus travel for younger children.”

Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport at City of York Council, said: “Such a strong take-up of the £1 fare proves that young people really are ready to get on board buses.

“The continued commitment to the funding from the Mayor is very welcome, as we deliver a variety of projects to make buses one of the most convenient ways to get around York.”
