Final bid to stop Tube strikes as London faces major travel disruption

Last-ditch talks will be held today in a bid to avert strikes by London Underground drivers.

London Underground drivers, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, are set to walk out in a dispute over the working week.

Strikes are planned for Tuesday and Thursday.

The action could cause severe travel disruption across the capital.

Claire Mann, chief operating officer at Transport for London (TfL), said: “We still believe that the points they have raised can be worked out in time, through more detailed discussions and we are continuing to talk to the union’s representatives to find a way to avoid disruption to London.”

The dispute centres around plans to introduce a four-day working week.

The RMT has not agreed to the change, raising concerns: “Our members have raised serious concerns around fatigue, longer shifts, reduced flexibility and the impact these proposals could have in a safety-critical role.”

Meanwhile, the drivers’ union Aslef has already accepted the new arrangements.

TfL advised passengers to check before they travel.
